Nantes' urban regeneration is like a fantasy in everyday life.

Detailed schedule

Lee Dayeong
Except time for joint activities, I allocated time to team and individual activities. Team activity time is to share contents, give feedback and collect contents by working together within joint schedule. In the individual working hours, I spent them in personal activities when necessary in agreement with team members.

Yi Juneseok
I collected the sounds of some very trivial and personal things I experienced while getting around Nantes every day. While observing people's behavior, I recorded them in a video.

Kim Doyeon
I searched Nantes' fantasy elements and elements of daily life and went on explorations there. While writing my daily story, I observed and compared them with real life.

Chang Suji
I did my personal activities mainly for collecting images. Collecting images at Château des ducs de Bretagne, Botanical Garden, Cimetière La Bouteillerie, Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Nantes and sea images at Saint-Nazaire, Machines of the Isle of Nantes and Nantes daily video in downtown Nantes. In addition, I appreciated the works at the Estuarie (Biennale) in the estuary of the river, visited the Arts Museum of Nantes and viewed the Lieu Unique after visiting Paradise, Artist Residence.

Achievements | Experience the city of ‘Nantes’, a representative area of urban regeneration and collect a variety of information corresponding to the distinctiveness and historic nature of the area.

Yi Juneseok
Theme | Sounds of Nantes
Activities | Collecting various sounds of Nantes daily and recombining them as heterogeneous in everyday life.
Major Achievements | In ordinary daily life, Nantes' fantasy is revealed through sound, and the essence of ordinary space is shaken.

Theme | Fantasy in daily life
Activities | Collecting Nantes' fantasy and reveal them in the everyday life that we generally experience.
Major Achievements | If the memories of Nantes emerge in daily life, I can express the unwilled memories that I have experienced in Nantes and create a simulacre situation that coexists in reality.

Theme | Assume ‘Nantes = Fantasy’ and work on it
Activities | Is Nantes = Fantasy? Under this assumption, I arrived in Nantes and collected fantasy images and heterogeneous images that I actually experienced. For example, upon discovering architectures that have ambiguous inside and outside and facing a scene where unseen balloons are dancing and floating in the sky, I create a video that gives a disparate feeling of spaces inside out along with this landscape.
Major Achievements | Collecing sounds and scenery of Nantes, the video follows an image-telling method, not a narrative. Fragmented images, Nantes' sound, and intuitive editing allow viewers each of their own interpretation.

After the workshop: During the workshop, we followed joint schedule, shared contents of each other's project in meetings, and the contents were complemented through feedbacks, interim presentations and activities

Purpose of field activities

As discussions went on the development of facilities and areas that have been neglected or converted after deindustrialization, the role of culture and art has emerged as an important issue in Nantes, the representative city of urban regeneration. We experienced the city in person, explored, and recorded visually its cultural and industrial values. In addition, by sharing with students of School of Visual Arts in different fields, we intend to promote new visual attempts in the upcoming work.

Expected effects and suggestions

Lee Dayeong
These visual activities approach people symbolically and emotionally in giving an identity of the region and recording traces of history. They also have a positive effect on enhancing the image of the city and enable expanding to individual work based on these activities.

Yi Juneseok
I never had a chance to know about other departments of School of Visual Arts but through this opportunity, I got to know other departments and it seems to be the best point of this project. I learned a lot other than the architecture, and I think it broadened my perspective.

Kim Doyeon
Through the exchanges within School of Visual Arts, I was able to look into a wider spectrum of work, and it became an opportunity to understand a wide range of work afterwards. It remains regretful that it would have been better if visit programs of The Nantes Saint-Nazaire school of fine art or The National Superior School of Architecture of Nantes had become more specialized and role allocation in the exhibition planning had been done in advance. It was great to experience in person the special method of artistic urban regeneration in Nantes.

Chang Suji
Although it was a short period of time, it was possible to present a new perspective on Nantes in a stranger's view and it became a new experience not only in individual activities but also in joint activities. Visiting the The Nantes Saint-Nazaire school of fine art was a valuable experience in terms of educational environment and it was also an opportunity to think more flexibly such as convergence between different genres.
