Theme | Port cities Nantes and Incheon, connecting with movement
Activities | A port city is a place where people and ships of many nationalities come and go. I wanted to connect the mobility of the port city Nantes to the mobility of the port city Incheon. For this, while walking around Nantes along the Green Line route, I collected the movements of Nantes as moving images. I plan to use the video as a source to make a choreography, and to change the choreography into an image of Incheon afterwards.
Major Achievements | I could see in person the similarities and differences between Nantes and Incheon, which are transforming from a port city to a city of culture and arts. I have collected about 200 video sources, of which about 10 have already been made as choreography

Theme | A trip for everyone: Along the Nantes Green Line route
Activities | I walked along the Green Line route and collected signs and information materials that consider the accessibility and mobility of various subjects. Records of experiences encountered in major tourist sites connecting the Green Line, and research data available from each institution. I compared  printed materials such as tourist maps, brochures and information on the website with real experiences.
Major Achievements | Walking along the Green Line of Nantes, I was able to reflect on the way various subjects experience the city. We experienced the devices that enabled various subjects to experience culture and art and collected data for the production of the result.

Theme | Discovering New Stories in the Green Line route
Activities | Creating a new map by finding typography hidden in the Green Line route and other city centers of  Nantes (non-graphical elements).
Major Achievements | Sharing the traveler's personal experiences and conveying the fun of finding small parts that have not been discovered in the city trip.

Theme | Tracking the practical changes of Nantes on the walking scale and expressing minimal Nantes with cognitive maps.
Activities | Noting basic changes along the Green Line route, and tracking the contrasting elements in the additional field research.
Major Achievements | Nantes, which retains most of its past, was able to find a noticeable contrast between the past and the present in the ‘materials, textures and colors’ of new buildings coming up with urban regeneration and the closed up element itself contains a shape of change.

Purpose of field activities

See the port city of Nantes with my own eyes and experience how culture and art are dealt there. And I get around Nantes and collect videos to complete the project.

Walking along the Green Line of Nantes, I contemplate the way various subjects experience the city. Under the catch phrase ‘A trip for everyone’, I search the elements considering the accessibility of various types of disabled including the blind and the mobility of wheelchairs and strollers, so that various subjects can experience culture and art. I compare the guided elements with real experiences and reconstructs them into text and visual materials.

Getting to know what Nantes wants to show travelers its inherent aspects through walking experiences on the Green Line route. Finding and analyzing the unique images and stories of Nantes that are hidden in the route and create new content

To directly experience the changes of the present state as a result of Nantes’ successful urban regeneration is the most powerful solution to narrowing the gap of error in a realistic problem that cannot but indirectly convey to a third party through exhibitions. Therefore, I wanted to include scenes as they are without decorating at the stage of feeling and experiencing and I tried to find direct elements that could describe the shape of change excluding emotions, without simply focusing on the aspect of cultural activities in Nantes.

Methods of field activities

Starting from the Green Line route, I travel around Nantes and collect moving images.

I walk along the Green Line route and collect signs and information materials that consider the accessibility and mobility of various subjects. Focusing on the History Museum of Nantes and Arts Museum of Nantes, I record the experiences encountered in main tourist sites and researched materials available from each institution. Printed materials such as tourist maps and brochures and information on the website are compared with actual experiences.

Lee Hyeyeong
After the fixed joint schedule, walking along the Green Line route from the place where the schedule ended. Visiting and researching major events, landmarks, and public facilities in the area. While walking, I look around the city center slowly and archive materials according to the subject of each of the group members’ project with photographs and videos.

First, I tracked the daily life of Nantes along the Green Line route and in the process, various elements different from preexistence were captured in specific areas. I tried to find a way to bring directly the difference between old past that retained in the city and the added modern elements.

Plan to use the results

Yang Yunhwa
Some of the 200 video clips collected while traveling around Nantes are made into choreography. And images of Incheon, which have similar movements to the choreography, are collected and complete into videos.

Kim Bokyeong
Comparing the print and image data collected in Nantes with the experiences of exploring the real city. Walking along the Green Line of Nantes, I arrange devices that enables various subjects to experience culture and art and create texts and maps that reinterpret them.

Lee Hyeyeong
Using the collected photographic images and the coordinate values of the photographs, I create a new type of map to find the hidden typos in Nantes. It can function as a map and as a graphic poster.

Lee Chulho
A Chinese-English architect working under the name ‘Yat’ is a unique photographer. He removes the three-dimensional sense of space as much as possible and takes pictures by pressing objects like a flat surface. The part that can be emphasized by this is that the color and pattern of the object is very conspicuous. I decided this method to be an effective way to show the minimal Nantes mentioned from the beginning, and I thought that if the images of Nantes were captured in close-ups even to the texture, it could show the changing patterns according to the flow of the times through materials, textures and colors. And when they are crowded, it is I expected that an interesting appearance will be described. In addition, if one picture is set as a pixel and that type expands like 2X2, 3X3, 4X4, 5X5..., it is also possible to insert intentional images like dot images in the past.

Expected effects and suggestions

Yang Yunhwa
Both Nantes and Incheon have in common that they are transforming from a port city to a city of culture and arts. It connects the two cities with body movements but what we will see as a result is the mobility of the two cities that have been actively moving and are transforming again.

Kim Bokyeong
The data that summarizes the characteristics of ‘A trip for everyone’ experienced in Nantes are expected to be valuable as research results. Through the reinterpreted texts and maps of the Green Line, the experience of Nantes can be expanded into new stories and images.

Lee Hyeyeong
Using the completed twenty-six alphabets, it can function as a new typo in the city of Nantes and be the beginning of city branding.

Lee Chulho
To sum up, when you look at the cluster of photos up close, you can experience Nantes' cognitive map indirectly through textures, books, and simple symbols in between. And from a distance, numerous pixels can give an effect that looks like a single image representing Nantes. This would be an effective way to interpret the city with the theme of minial Nantes.
